The summer season upon us and Smith Mountain Lake is in full gear with events and activities for every age and interest.Â Read on to sample just a few of the top lake area events planned for July, August and September!
Independence Day sets the stage for a summer of celebration.Â Â July 4th at SML offers all the traditional fun and fabulous fireworks.Â This year there are two exceptional fireworks displays.Â The family fun begins at 2PM at the Parkway Marina with rides, arts, crafts, food and music.Â This event, hosted by the Saunders Volunteer Fire Company, also includes a classic car and boat show.Â The site is located on Route 626 in Huddleston, just 3 miles past the Smith Mountain Lake State Park.Â Â Spectators can arrive by boat or by car for a truly great view.Â There will also be an incredible display at the Franklin County High School on July 4th.
On Saturday, September 19th the Smith Mountain Lake Antique and Classic Boat Association present their 19th annual in-water boat show.Â This lakeside family event will be held from 10:00 AM â€“ 4:00 PM at Mariners Landing in Huddleston, VA.Â Thereâ€™s something for every age and interest with boat building and restoration demonstrations, kidâ€™s activities, great food, quality crafts, and a wide range of beautifully restored antique cars.Â Collectors from all over the country travel to Smith Mountain Lake to take part in this nationally known event.Â Both the show and parking are free of charge.Â For more information, go to www.woodenboats.net.
At Smith Mountain Lake, September is synonymous with the annual Wine Festival.Â 2009 marks the 21st year with 27 Virginia wineries, 85 quality crafters and food vendors participating.Â The location at LakeWatch Plantation is ideally suited on a vast grassy meadow overlooking a beautiful pond and offers views of Smith Mountain.Â Live musical entertainment will be performed by top named bands, â€˜Dominoâ€™ on Saturday. Â â€˜Clueâ€™ and â€˜Fuzzy Logicâ€™ perform on Sunday for listening(and dancing) enjoyment.Â This event, sponsored by the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce, will be held on Sept. 26th and 27th from 11 – 6 PM on Sat. and 11 â€“ 5 on Sun. Â rain or shine.Â Tickets are $18.00 taster and $12.00 non-taster advance (avail. until 5pmÂ 9/23/09) and $22.00 taster/$15.00 non-taster at the gate.
