Letter to the Editor:
Thanks from the SML Chamber to all for Community Cooperation,
Speaking for the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber, its members and Board of Directors, I would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the volunteers, sponsors, businesses and attendees for their help and support of TWO incredible area events.
On Friday, April 29th, for the 8th consecutive year, the SML Regional Chamber and 110+ businesses joined forces in a single location to share information on the wide range of products and services available in our community. The SML Business Expo, held ‘under the big tops’ in DownTown Moneta, was a monumental effort for all involved. Then, with an ideal festival site already in place, conversation turned to how the space it could be utilized to promote our community on the following day. A committee formed to create the first, in what promises to be an annual festival, called Rockin Brews and BBQs. Of course, adding another event called for more volunteers willing to give their time and talent. Volunteers stepped forward.
It would be impossible to conduct quality events without the assistance of dedicated volunteers and equally difficult to include the names of every person in this force. Like a machine with many parts, each element is critical to the function….and there are a lot of parts! We would like to express our appreciation to everyone involved. We would also like to give special recognition to some of the committee leaders, businesses, groups and organizations. Event décor and landscaping were provided by Mulch N More, Lynette Webb. Parking for both events was expertly coordinated by Tom Cosgrove and members of the SML Rotary Club along with the Bedford Sheriff Department and Bedford County Supervisor, Chuck Neudorfer. Radio Shack, Steve Miller provided the sound system, vendor support was provided by Bill Harlor, Steve Chiminello, Pete Philips, Tony Stanchina and Tim Gardner; Roanoke Golf Carts provided transportation; the food tent was coordinated by Jane Boney, Reba Dillon, Deanna Early; Signs and fencing were set by John Smith, H.T. Page, Donald Furrow and Bill Harlor; Registration and tickets were organized by Cheryl & Frank Ward and Susie Pratt, also providing photography; Karen Burks coordinated door prizes; Alison Turner and Debra Squire of VEC organized the Business Connection; Theresa Tyree led the Exhibitor assistance group and clean-up effort.
Many of the Expo helpers returned on Saturday to help with Rockin Brews & BBQ’s. Special thanks go to Ravelle Whitener, Ecstatic Designs for creating the colorful, distinctive logo. Kyle Enslow coordinated the entertainment, Mike Gray led the beverage committee. Our thanks go out to the YMCA and SML Magic & Science Shop for providing fun kids activities. Special thanks go to DownTown Moneta for providing an ideal location and the support of our sponsors, who make these events possible.

We live in an exceptional community with people who help one another. The success of these events are a small example of what happens when we put our efforts together. We hope that the events inspired ideas, friendships and a spirit of celebration in addition to providing an economic boost and promoting local business trade. Thanks to all…plans are already underway to do it again in 2012.
