Retail Alliance named The General Store the winner of this year’s regional “Retailer of the Year” award.
Norfolk VA, April 30, 2010: Virginia-based Retail Alliance named The General Store the winner of this year’s regional “Retailer of the Year” award for Smith Mountain Lake. The award was presented at a gala celebration on Friday, April 30th at the Nauticus Museum in downtown Norfolk. There were 158 nominees throughout the state of Virginia and The General Store was one of the elite. Also regionally nominated were the Little Gallery, VitaZen, Gifts Ahoy and the Mayberry Drive-In & Diner.
The evening featured a cruise-like theme. Upon embarkation attendees were invited to have their photo taken. Once “aboard the ship” they were whisked away to the upper level where there were 9 different food stations displaying a diversion of cultures, an incredible view, bingo & various casino games as well as opportunities to win door prizes. To start off the presentation, Tim Gard, a Humor Expert delivered an amusing “seminar” on how to find your humor & make the best of any situation. This was followed by the nominee recognition & award presentation.
Recipients were selected based on excellence in creativity, business acumen, retail success and the ability to thrive in a tough economy. Nominees were evaluated based on growth, financial strength/stability and community involvement. The General Store’s regional victory was just one of 9 service areas awarded. The overall Retailer of the Year was awarded to four-year-old The Royal Chocolate located in Virginia Beach.
“Running a business is no simple task; the market is challenging and the obstacles a retailer faces are difficult”, says Retail Alliance President & CEO Susan Milhoan. “It takes more than the ordinary entrepreneur to succeed in this competitive environment. Retailers deserve to be recognized for outstanding customer service and devotion to their community”.
One of the reasons The General Store was chosen to receive this award is their ongoing effort to be a part of the community. They were also instrumental in their participation in an Extreme Home Makeover episode airing Sunday, May 16th, 2010. Be sure to tune in!
